Message to send to your MP:

As a football fan I ask that you back John Cryer MP’s Early Day Motion (1059) which “calls on the Government to enforce a genuine fit and proper person test” for all football clubs.

On 25th May 2014 Leyton Orient came within a penalty shootout of being a Championship club. They were then sold to Francesco Becchetti and, within three years, found themselves bottom of League Two - facing relegation and a winding up order from Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs.

Leyton Orient FC avoided liquidation when, on Monday 20th March 2017, Becchetti told the high court in London he would put another £1m into the club to clear its debts. Supporters have had it with Becchetti – “We Want Our Club Back” says the Leyton Orient Fans’ Trust.

This isn’t just a story of one club though – there are many clubs throughout the land who feel owners are using their club as a plaything, without showing any respect to that club’s history or fan base. Please do sign this EDM and give your backing to a proper fit and proper person test.

John Cryer MP (Early Day Motion 1059):

“That this House notes with deep concern that a winding-up order has been served on Leyton Orient FC by HM Revenue and Customs due to non-payment of taxes by the club's owner, Francesco Becchetti; further notes Mr Becchetti's highly dubious business record, including a criminal investigation by the Albanian Government, and his incompetent stewardship of Leyton Orient FC; notes that a venerable and well-known community football club is now under threat; and calls on the Government to enforce a genuine fit and proper person test, ensuring that any prospective or current club owner's ability and willingness to pay creditors is robustly checked on a regular basis.”
